A hit -and-run driver killed a UPS employee east of Dallas, early Saturday morning. UPS confirmed the driver had been with the company since 1988 and was about to be inducted into the delivery service's 25 years of safe driving Circle of Honor.
Another driver, Willie Coleman, was heading home from work, driving 80 west toward Dallas, near FM 548 in Forney, just after midnight Saturday, when he saw the UPS 18-wheeler pulled over with its flashers on, and something in the road.
"As I get closer, I realize it's a body," he said.
Coleman called 911 and says he began using the flashlight on his phone to try and divert traffic from hitting him again. He says he noticed some vomit on the side of the road and believes the UPS driver may have gotten sick, and pulled over.
"I imagine he was trying to get home to his family, also, because he drove for UPS, and UPS hub is up the street about five miles, so he almost made his destination."
Forney Police arrived on scene and began investigating the crash as a hit-and-run. Coleman says there were no skid marks on the highway, and the car that hit him lost a wheel well on impact. He stayed on scene as investigators shut down the westbound lanes, where the crash happened. He says he noticed pictures of young children in the man's wallet as police were flipping through.
"They're waiting for him to come home, and it's not going to happen," He said, "I just don't understand why someone would run over him like that and just leave him there."
Police have not released any information about a possible suspect. The name of the driver has not been released out of respect for the family.
