School supplies are tax free this weekend in Texas

You can shop tax free this weekend for all of your back-to-school supplies. FOX 4's Shannon Murray talked to parents who were taking advantage of the deal at Target in Richardson.

The annual sales tax exemption holiday runs from Friday through midnight on Sunday.

Specific items, such as school supplies, backpacks, clothing, and shoes priced under $100, will not be taxed at the register.

The tax-free items can be bought in-store or purchased online, as long as those stores do business in Texas.

Parents putting off bills, buying groceries to pay for back-to-school expenses, survey finds

Half of parents surveyed revealed that they plan to sacrifice necessities – such as groceries and bills – to make sure their kids are prepared for the school year.

For many parents and teachers, every little bit of savings makes a difference.

"It's nice to get the little break in what we're spending," said Ashleigh Robb, a Richardson High School teacher. "I'm looking for notebook paper for sure. We use a lot of that with math. Pencils, markers because we have dry-erase desks. That's always convenient as well."

Some stores are also offering additional discounts and incentives.

At Target, teachers can receive a one-time 20% discount through Aug. 24. College students can get 20% through September. And Target Circle members can bring in any used denim for a 20% discount on a new denim purchase.
