Texas-shaped flag landmark removed from I-20

DALLAS - Workers rolled up and removed the Texas-shaped flag landmark along Interstate 20 in Southwest Dallas Tuesday morning.

The widely popular landmark was installed by local turf company in the grassy area near the intersection of I-20 and Spur 408 in 2010. But the Texas Department of Transportation decided to remove it for safety reasons.

TxDOT said too many drivers were pulling off or onto the highway to see the attraction. There have been no reported accidents, but the department thought it was best to move it to prevent potential accidents.

The large stones around the landmark were hauled off on Monday. Workers took the spikes out the artificial turf and rolled it up Tuesday morning.. They'll haul everything away, including the gravel.

For many the Texas-shaped flag was a source of pride.

“That’s really unfortunate because like I said, it makes it feel like home. And it’s a nice place to come and sit. You have a beautiful view,” said Kara Jones, who stopped to see it before it was gone.

“Coming into the city of Dallas from the Fort Worth side, you do get to see this every time and it’s a real nice thing to see,” added Mel Jackson.

TxDOT plans to work with the city of Grand Prairie to move the landmark to a new location. They’re still deciding on the best place for it.
