Texas Representative proposes after being sworn in

Texas Representative Venton Jones, who represents the Dallas area, proposed to his partner after being sworn in at the beginning of the new term.

Texas Representative Venton Jones (D-Dallas) kicked off the beginning of a new legislative session by proposing to his partner.

What we know:

Shortly after being sworn in Jones, the Texas House Democratic Caucus Whip and Vice Chair of the Texas LGBTQ Caucus, dropped to one knee on the floor of the Texas House of Representatives.

In the video, you can hear Jones' partner, Gregory Scott Jr. loudly say, "Yes!" before a wave of cheers.

Jones says his proposal shows his commitment to "fight for a world where love is celebrated."

Jones represents District 100, which includes parts of South Dallas, West Dallas, East Dallas, Buckner Terrace, Victory Park, and Oak Cliff.

This is Jones' second term in the State House.

"In a time when our love and our very existence are challenged, often in the halls of this very building, this moment is a reminder that love conquers all. Gregory and I stand as proof that progress is unstoppable, and no amount of hate can erase the truth of who we are," said Rep. Jones in a statement. "I plan on using my power as the House Democratic Caucus Whip and Vice-Chair of the LGBTQ Caucus to protect all Texans. Our love symbolizes resilience and our story reminds us that love can and will always overcome hate."

Rep. Jones and Scott plan to announce the details of their engagement in the coming weeks.
