Shooting near Tennessee State University during homecoming kills 1, injures 9

1 killed, 9 injured in Tennessee State shooting

At least one person was killed, nine others were injured after a shooting near the campus of Tennessee State University, Nashville Police said. Some of the victims may have been involved in the shooting, according to police. The shooting happened near the university's homecoming event, on Jefferson Street and 27th Avenue.

Police in Nashville said at least one person died, and several people were hurt following a shooting near Tennessee State University on Saturday.

Metro Nashville Police said gunfire erupted near the intersection of Jefferson St & 27th Ave N. 

They also said all victims had been taken to area hospitals. Police said five were transported by the Nashville Fire Department. Another five arrive at the hospital by private vehicle.

Authorities said the deceased victim was a 24-year-old man. Three juveniles were hurt.

They add at least one of the victims is suspected to have been involved in the shooting. 

The university was celebrating its homecoming, according to the news outlet. The football game against Eastern Illinois University at Nissan Stadium was at 5 p.m.

"It's not a good thing when a handful of people can cause disruption for the entire community," MNPD spokesperson Don Aaron told WTVF. "This type of gun violence has got to stop. We didn't expect this to happen here with all the law enforcement and safety people here. There were police officers and firefighters everywhere."

Authorities believe two groups of people were targeting each other, according to the news outlet.
