Student arrested for bomb threat at Byron Nelson High School

TROPHY CLUB, Texas - Police have arrested a student for the bomb threat last week that led to a three-hour lockdown at Byron Nelson High School in Trophy Club.

The high school was placed on lockdown last Monday after a caller told police several pipe bombs were placed inside the school and that a gunman was waiting inside.

During a Monday news conference, Trophy Club police say the department and the FBI responded so forcefully because the calls seemed to be coming from inside the school.

Police said the caller contacted them six times, mocking them and providing details to make it sound like the caller was inside. They later determined the caller was not on campus but was receiving text messages from a student inside, who is now under arrest. Sources say the juvenile is a girl.

Police are still after the second suspect who called with the threats. They say he is out of state and is not a local student. Investigators believe the suspects met on the internet and came up with the scheme for the bomb threat. 

Police believe the juvenile made up the bomb threat to get out of school early. But the lockdown led to the students being kept in school more than two hours past their normal dismissal time.

Even after one week, some parents say they're still in shock.

"Oh, it was traumatizing for the parents, for the kids, for the teachers," said parent Melissa Widger.

"I don't want it just to be, 'Oh, they're kids. So let's just treat 'em like kids. It was a prank,'" said parent Teri McCarthy. "But it also can't be, 'Okay, we're gonna lock 'em away forever,' I think those kids need counseling. They need a talking to in the real world sense of what their actions led to."

The unnamed juvenile suspect is facing felony charges for making a false report. The second suspect will face similar charges once caught.
