Dozens of students at South Oak Cliff High School skipped class Monday to demand a new school.
Students there said they are tired of waiting on repairs to be made to the 63-year-old building. Among the complaints: hot or cold classrooms, unfinished roof repairs and gas leaks.
South Oak Cliff senior and quarterback David Johnson is leading the movement and said the protest is more about the other students than himself.
“These are not just seniors these are sophomores, freshmen, and juniors. These are the ones that have to go there. I'm going to be graduating soon. I'm a future alumnus so as an alumnus I want to come back to something great," Johnson said.
Dallas ISD Superintendent Michael Hinojosa will be at the school on Monday evening for a previously scheduled community meeting.
The district has set aside several million dollars for renovations to the school via a recently passed bond measure. But Johnson said they were told repairs would be finished by the start of this school year and students are tired of waiting.
