Crews continue search for missing 8-year-old after Christmas Eve crash in Sherman
SHERMAN, Texas - Emergency crews in Sherman are working for the third straight day as they search for an 8-year-old girl who went missing after a crash on Christmas Eve.
What We Know: Search efforts continued at 7 a.m. on Thursday morning.
Police say an SUV carrying six people was traveling from Durant, Oklahoma to McKinney on Highway 75 when it crashed on the morning of Christmas Eve.
Police believe the SUV hydroplaned because there was heavy rain in the area at the time. The waters swept the SUV down the ditch.
Rescue crews worked to get the occupants out of the SUV. One person died, and the girl washed away in the creek.
Of the four that were rescued, two needed to be hospitalized. They were both released from the hospital on Wednesday.
Sherman Police say that Thursday's rain and storms could make them pause search efforts.
"The active search will resume again the moment we are able to safely," reads a statement from Sherman police.
A number of local and state agencies, including Texas Task Force 2, are participating in the search.
What We Don't Know: Police have not identified the girl or the family involved in the crash.
What They're Saying: Police say they don't want to give false hope in their search for the the girl.
"We have not stopped hoping for a miracle," Sherman Police Lt. Sam Boyle said. "What's at the forefront of all our minds is the family who is still looking for their little girl."
How You Can Help: Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call 903-892-7290.
Sherman Police say they do not want any donations, because receiving the donations requires work and they want their full efforts to be focused on finding the 8-year-old.
