Sherman police searching for missing 8-year-old after Christmas Eve crash

SHERMAN, Texas - Crews in Sherman are looking for an 8-year-old girl after the SUV she was in crashed and fell into a flooded drainage ditch.

What We Know: Sherman Police say an SUV carrying 6 people was traveling from Oklahoma to McKinney on Highway 75, near Taylor Street, when it crashed on the morning of Christmas Eve.

Police believe the SUV hydroplaned because there was heavy rain in the area at the time. The waters swept the SUV down the ditch.

Rescue crews worked to get the occupants out of the SUV. One person died, and the girl washed away in the creek.

Of the four that were rescued, two needed to be hospitalized. They were both released from the hospital on Wednesday.

Searches resumed at the creek on Wednesday.

Police say dozens of first responders, including state crews, have searched about 7 miles of the creek, but the missing girl has not been located.

Law enforcement is now targeting some possible other locations in the county.

Searches will continue until dark tonight and then, if she is not found, again Thursday morning.

What We Don't Know: Police have not identified the girl or the family involved in the crash.
