Sea lion hitches ride on boat, gets snacks
CABO SAN LUCAS, Mexico (KTVU) - A sea lion in the Gulf of Cortez has found a clever way to catch a snack.
Nate Griggs of Arlington, Virginia tells KTVU he was deep sea fishing with his dad, Dan Griggs of San Francisco Sunday, when they got a surprise visitor.
"As we entered the Cabo Marina (a sea lion) exploded out of the water, and landed on the back platform of our boat. He had to weigh 600 pounds… maybe more."
The crew was familiar with the sea lion and called him "Pancho." The crew pet Pancho's head and fed him some fish before he swam off.
Griggs says Pancho seemed to enjoy the attention.
KTVU viewers have reported also having similar experiences with Pancho while boating in Cabo San Lucas. He appears to be somewhat of a local celebrity there.
Marine experts advise not to feed wildlife and to keep a safe distance.
