The listeners of a popular local radio program and its host have donated $40,000 to the wife of a slain Richardson police officer.
The Russ Martin Listeners Foundation cut the check the day after Officer David Sherrard was killed while responding to a call at a Richardson apartment complex. The check is made out to Sherrard’s wife, Nicole.
A copy of the letter sent from Martin to Richardson Police Chief Jimmy Spivey was posted on social media, along with an image of the check.
"On behalf of our listeners and the people of Dallas-Fort Worth, we ask that you please accept this check for Officer Sherrard’s family. We hope that it will help mitigate the cost of any immediate needs that they may have in this unimaginably trying time.”
The foundation regularly supports first responders who are killed while serving the public.
A funeral service for Sherrard is scheduled for Tuesday in Dallas.
