A company that makes cheese from raw milk recalled several of its products after the Food and Drug Administration warned of a possible link to multiple E. coli cases.

Raw Farm issued the voluntary recall this week for several varieties of its shredded and block cheddar cheeses but added it was doing so "under protest" and as a "path forward."

What we know:

The FDA, CDC, and local health officials are investigating a multi-state E. coli outbreak that has been linked to Raw Farm-brand dairy products. The FDA stated nine cases from three states – California, Florida, and Texas – have been reported, with children under five years of age accounting for most of them.

What we don't know:

The investigation into the connection between the raw cheese varieties and the E. coli cases is still ongoing. According to the company’s announcement that was posted onto the FDA website, no pathogens have been found in its cheese products, nor were they discovered in samples taken by state officials. The FDA also indicated no positive results have been reported to the agency.

What you can do:

The FDA recommends people who may have bought any of those varieties of cheese to check their freezers and refrigerators. Retailers are encouraged to pull the products from their shelves. Anyone who still has the recalled cheese is advised not to eat, sell, or serve it. The cheeses should be thrown away and any surface they touch should be sanitized.

The backstory:

Three days before the voluntary recall was announced, the FDA published its second statement about the investigation. At that time, it upped the number of cases since the original March 26 release to nine. The agency also noted in the update that it had asked Raw Farm to issue the voluntary recall, but the company had not responded.
