FORT WORTH, Texas - Fort Worth police say a person of interest is in custody after a two people were shot in their home Tuesday.
The incident happened around 11:30 a.m. in the 10200 block of Cool Springs Road, which is near Old Weatherford Road.
Police said a 69-year-old man was shot in the head and his 69-year-old wife was shot in the stomach. Both were taken to the hospital, but the man is not expected to survive. Police have not yet released their identities.
Investigators are not saying how the man got into the house, if he was let in or if it was forced entry.
A couple of neighbors saw the suspect speed off in the couple’s stolen light blue Kia Sorento but did not get a good description of him.
About a mile from the shooting scene, officers spotted a different car, not the stolen Kia, at a gas station. Without going into detail, Fort Worth police say that car was part of what led police east to Terrell.
After being thoroughly examined, the car found with one of its front tires flat was towed to the police impound.
Fort Worth police then cast a much wider net in hopes of finding their stolen SUV and the man who shot the elderly couple. By mid-afternoon, police had surrounded a Quik Trip off I-20 in Terrell where, a source tells FOX 4, a credit card stolen from the victims was used.
Two hours later, police surrounded a home on South Francis Street in Terrell and took a person of interest into custody. It was the culmination of what one Fort Worth officer called "great police work."
The stolen vehicle was later found at an apartment complex in Terrell in the 1000 block of Mineral Wells Street around 7 p.m.
"Anytime you have a home invasion, it's disturbing,” said Fort Worth Police Sgt. Marc Povero. “And this is what we would consider a random crime, which makes it even more disturbing. So there's just no sense to a crime like this."
The name of the man taken into custody has not been released.
