Police arrested a suspected drunken driver after a crash that injured an off-duty police officer.

Carrollton police said it all started just before 8:30 Tuesday when officers tried to pull Ruben Vargas over on Interstate 35 and Belt Line Road.

Vargas took off and a few minutes later hit a Dallas Police Department squad car near the Royal Lane exit. An off-duty officer was there working construction traffic detail.

The officer was inside his vehicle at the time. He was hurt but his injuries are not life-threatening, police said.

Vargas exited the interstate, abandoned his car and ran. He is also suspected of trying to carjack another driver with a knife before continuing to run, police said.

Carrollton police worked through the night to find and arrest him. He is facing charges for evading arrest and other charges are pending.

Police do believe he was under the influence of alcohol.
