Woman with knife shot by NRH police
North Richland Hills police shot a woman they say was threatening officers with a knife.
NORTH RICHLAND HILLS, Texas - North Richland Hills police shot a woman they say was threatening officers with a knife.
Cell phone video captured the aftermath of the shooting Tuesday. The woman was injured and taken to a hospital. She's expected to survive.
The woman's family tells FOX 4 she suffers from mental health problems and has had past encounters with police.
Just after 11:30 am Tuesday, North Richland Hills police say an officer shot a woman who threatened officers with a knife at an apartment complex near Rufe Snow Drive and 820.
An employee at the complex called 911, claiming a female tenant was in crisis and appeared out of control.
Officers arriving on scene observed the woman breaking items in the parking lot before going back inside her apartment.
When officers knocked on her door, police say the woman threatened a male officer with a knife and then advanced toward him. That officer then fired his weapon, striking the woman.
Cell phone video sent to FOX 4 shows the moments after the woman was shot. The officer holding the shield appears to kick the knife onto the cement. Both officers then backed away.
No officers were injured, according to police.
The woman’s family sent FOX 4 a picture of the knife they say she was holding when she was shot.
Paramedics quickly arrived on scene.
The woman was transported to the hospital and is expected to survive.
Police did not release her name.
Brianna Battreall lives just a few doors down from the woman and woke up Tuesday to a crime scene.
"They had crime scene tape around my car. All in front of my building," she said. "I’m blown away. I just can’t believe it even happened."
The woman's family didn't want to release her name at this time.
Per department procedure, the officer was placed on paid administrative leave.
