FORT WORTH, Texas - Commuters will be able to ride the rails from Fort Worth to DFW Airport with the opening of the Trinity Metro TEXRail on Saturday.
The new TEXRail system will give tens of thousands of people in northeastern Tarrant County and beyond a whole new transportation option.
It spans 27 miles from Texas and Pacific Station in Fort Worth to Terminal B at DFW Airport. The line also includes nine stops including four in Fort Worth, two in North Richland Hills and one in Grapevine.
The Smithfield Station in North Richland Hills was all decked out with bunting Monday for an opening ceremony. Service for the public begins on Saturday.
The first train will depart the station each day at 3:25 a.m. and arrive at the airport 52 minutes later. It will run around the clock except for a couple of hours in the very early morning.
Rides will be free until Feb. 1 so people can try it out. Afterward, a one-way train ticket will cost $2.50. Commuters can also buy a $5 day pass that is good for all trains and buses in Tarrant County.
Construction for the $1 billion project began in August of 2016. Roughly half was funded by a grant from the federal government. By the end of the first year, the TEXRail is expected to accommodate about 8,000 passengers each day.
