Police in Midlothian are looking for two men who carjacked a grandmother in a Walmart parking lot on Easter Sunday.
Surveillance video captured one of the men pointing a gun at the victim and demanding her car keys. The 68-year-old grandmother told FOX 4 she knew she was supposed to toss her keys and run, but says her first instinct was to fight.
Not too many grandmothers can brag they tried to fight off a car thief, but 68-year-old Linda Cullins can.
Cullins can be seen on surveillance cameras putting her groceries in the back of her dark-colored 2007 Ford Escape at the Midlothian Walmart. Then, two young suspects are seen closing in on her.
"When he approached me, he was very calm and polite,” Cullins recalled.
She says that’s when one man walks up and tells her to give him her keys.
"And I told him no and he came up closer and said ‘give me your keys,’” Cullins explained. “I said no, and that's when he showed me the gun."
Right then, Cullins hit the alarm button on her key, the car started honking, and she started screaming. At one point, she says she punched one of them in the shoulder right before he grabbed her keys. That's when she says the two thieves turned into bumbling fools.
"I think in the confusion to try to turn the horn off, he hit the button that locked the door,” said Cullins. “The other kiddo, when he came up, couldn’t get in the car. So, he was running around the car trying to find a way in."
Cullins guesses this may have been the car thieves’ first time doing this.
Midlothian Police Captain John Spann says the noise from the honking horn drew the attention of the driver of an SUV who followed the carjackers for a short time while calling 911.
Investigators are still looking for Cullins’ stolen SUV. Detectives also have another surveillance camera video from a nearby church which shows the thieves being dropped off by someone in a silver car before the carjacking.
Besides getting caught, Cullins thinks the young thieves need a good slap upside the head.
Anyone with information is asked to contact the Midlothian Police Department.
