Mesquite police officer shoots suspect during early morning chase
MESQUITE, Texas - Mesquite police are investigating a shooting that involved an officer.
What We Know: The shooting happened just before 3 a.m. on Monday morning near the intersection of Interstate 30 and Gus Thomasson Road.
Mesquite police said an officer who was in the area heard gunfire coming from eastbound I-30.
Moments later, the officer saw a speeding vehicle exit on Gus Thomasson Road and then try to turn around to get back on the interstate in the opposite direction.
But police said the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed. That’s when four men jumped out of the vehicle.
The officer chased one of the suspects on foot and ended up firing several shots. The suspect was hit multiple times and taken to the hospital in an unknown condition.
Two of the three other suspects were later taken into custody by other officers. A fourth suspect got away and is still at large.
No officers were hurt during the shooting.
Mesquite police said they did recover a firearm from the suspect who was shot, as well as additional weapons inside the suspects’ vehicle.
The Dallas County District Attorney’s Office will conduct an independent review of the officer-involved shooting.
What We Don’t Know: Mesquite police haven’t yet identified the suspects or released any details about the initial gunfire on I-30.
No description of the fourth suspect was released.

Traffic cameras captured images of several squad cars blocking southbound Gus Thomasson Road.
According to FOX 4’s Chip Waggoner, the southbound lanes of Gus Thomasson Road near I-30 remain closed because of the investigation.
Drivers are encouraged to avoid the area.
