Man shot and killed by Dallas apartment security guard
Dallas Police say a security guard shot and killed a man after a confrontation at an apartment complex in South Dallas.
Vanessa Olguin has not only lost her husband, 38-year-old Jorge Olguin, but her 12-year-old son, Jorge, and 10-year-old daughter, Amy, witnessed his shooting.
Olguin's sister in law, Reyna Rojas, helped translate during an interview Monday.
"He died in a way that nobody is supposed to, " said Rojas, "Especially in front of your kids and your wife."
The family was at a 1-year-old's birthday party in the parking lot of an apartment complex, near Wheatland Road and I-35E, Saturday. They say they stayed late, past the 10 o'clock curfew at the complex, and that's when Dallas Police say the family got into an argument with a security guard about being told to leave. Police say the armed, commission security guard requested backup and a second security guard responded to the location. The family claims the first guard pepper sprayed them and that's when the confrontation escalated.
"He put pepper spray on me," said 12-year-old Jorge Olguin, "My dad, my sister, and my mom."
Police say it got physical, and the guard pulled a gun. Police say Jorge Olguin was shot multiple times, but did not release more details. The family claims he was shot three times, and they're questioning the guard's motive. They say they used to live at those apartments, and say there is a history of disputes between the guard and Olguin over things like parking violations. Dallas Police questioned the guard and released him, declining to charge him. They instead referred the case to the Dallas County District Attorney's office which will present it to a grand jury to determine if he will be charged.
"It hurts us that he's gone," said Rojas,"But it also hurts us to know these kids are going to be traumatized for the rest of their lives."
