PLANO, Texas - A fast-moving storm brought heavy rain and lots of hail to North Texas Wednesday night.
Video from FOX 4 viewer Nikki Granado shows hail coming down into her family’s kitchen in Plano. Other viewers submitted photos of shattered windows, skylights and windshields.
A FOX 4 storm chaser was driving through the storm when golf ball sized hail coming down. Nick Busby pulled over as the ice cracked his windshield.
“I was actually stopped in a parking lot because it was getting pretty nasty. It came through the back window and I actually felt it spray down. And it went into my shirt, pretty much my entire car from front to back. It made it to the windshield and somehow there was actually glass from the back on the dash of the car it hit that hard,” Busby said.
Near President George Bush Turnpike and Preston Road the hail damaged cars in the parking lot of a hotel. The back windshields of some vehicles were completely shattered.
Hundreds more autos were pummeled at Huffines Chrysler Jeep Dodge just down the street. The company said 3,000 of its vehicles at five separate dealerships suffered damage.
The hail busted just about 300 windows at the Oaks at Collin Creek apartment complex. One resident said the storm woke her up.
"So I get to running, trying to find cover and I hear all this ting, ting, ting, ting. It's hail. You can still see the hail here. It's hail and the next thing I know the windows start clinking and just falling out," said Lisa Ellis.
Residents are now wondering how quickly management will get things repaired. The complex said its dealing with roughly 300 broken windows.
"My wife just went to Home Depot to get some plastic, we are going to staple up some plastic and just hope something happens here pretty soon," said resident Joe Walsh.
The Wal-Mart on Highway 78 in Wylie was closed Thursday morning because of the storm damage. Almost all of the store's skylights broke, allowing water and debris to rain down inside. Workers had to clean it up before the store could reopen.
The storms came ahead of a cold front pushing through North Texas, which brought strong northwestern wind and a drop in temperatures. FOX 4’s Evan Andrews said the forecast is a lot quieter heading into the weekend with temperatures in the low 70’s and mostly sunny skies.
