FORT WORTH, Texas - A Fort Worth attorney and his family were held at gunpoint and forced to withdraw cash from an ATM by intruders who broke into their home.
Police said it happened Wednesday morning in the 4900 block of Riverbend Drive in the upscale Overton Woods neighborhood of Fort Worth.
Cynthia and Jeff Prostok woke up around 3:45 a.m. to see the barrel of a gun.
Police say two men apparently entered the house through a back door that happened to be unlocked and held the family at gunpoint.
“They were only interested in cash,” Cynthia recalled. “My husband had money in his wallet, but they weren't satisfied with that so they wanted to take us to an ATM.”
While one of the men stayed with Cynthia, the other, who the Prostoks say was more aggressive, went with Jeff to an ATM just down the road.
Jeff says the suspect stayed in the car and out of camera sight as he forced Jeff to withdraw around $1,900.
“They kept telling us they weren't going to hurt us,” Cynthia said. “I mean you can choose to focus on what could have happened. I tried to be an optimist.”
In the meantime, Cynthia was back home “chatting” with the man holding her hostage. He even let her use the restroom.
“The one I stayed with, he apologized,” she said. “He wished he didn't have to do this. Said he had done this before but doesn't like to do it.”
Cynthia says the suspect told her they picked the home because there were cars parked out front.
Fort Worth police say it’s a quiet neighborhood. While unusual, they believe what happened is isolated.
“There is nothing in the preliminary investigation that would lead us to believe there is some type of fear in that community and neighborhood,” said Fort Worth Police Officer Jimmy Pollozani.
Police have not released a specific description of the suspects.
Meanwhile, the Prostoks are changing their locks and hope no one else endures a morning of terror like they did.
Anyone with information is urged to contact the Fort Worth Police Department.
