HALTOM CITY, Texas - A 16-year-old boy is fighting for his life after a suspected road rage shooting in Haltom City.
The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. on Sunday as two vehicles stopped at the light at the intersection of East Belknap Street and Layton Avenue.
Haltom City police were able to track the suspect vehicle before the shooting. They were coming from Fort Worth into Haltom City.
Surveillance video shows two vehicles side by side traveling down East Belknap Street early Sunday morning.
Seconds later, shots were fired. A 16-year-old was hit in the back while sitting in the passenger seat.
Although the shooting is not visible in the surveillance video, it captured the sound of gunshots going off.
The teenager’s older brother pulled over to call 911 right after it happened.
"The victim’s vehicle was struck two times: one in the left rear tire and one went through the trunk," said Haltom City Police Chief Cody Phillips.
Investigators say the shooting stemmed from road rage.
The two brothers were less than half a mile from their Haltom City home.
"The victim vehicle pulled out of a parking lot and pulled out in front of the suspect vehicle. Video evidence shows there is an exchange of some sort," Phillips said.
That’s when Haltom City police say someone from the dark-colored sedan on the inside lane opened fire on the victim’s Chrysler 300 on the outside lane.
A FOX 4 photographer’s dash cam shows an officer searching for shell casings in the street.
Detectives believe four young men were inside the suspect vehicle, which has a vague description.
"It’s a dark-colored sedan. Four-door. LED bright lights," Phillips said.
Prior to the shooting, Flock cameras showed the suspect vehicle coming from the Fort Worth area, but the car hasn’t popped up on any cameras after the shooting.
Police obtained some surveillance from businesses along Belknap, including a mechanic shop. But they are hoping the public can help with more.
Police say the victim’s family recently moved to North Texas, so he is not enrolled in any school right now. The family is asking for privacy as the teenager remains in the hospital fighting for his life.
