Garland man kills wife, mother-in-law in apartment shooting with 2 kids inside: police

Garland police say a man fatally shot his wife and mother-in-law after some kind of domestic dispute while two kids were inside the apartment.

Police were called to the Arts at Broadway Commons apartments around 8 a.m. Tuesday off Interstate 30 near Lake Ray Hubbard.

When officers arrived at the apartment, they found the door had been forced open.

Officers looked inside and saw two small children. As they moved in, they heard several gunshots coming from the back bedroom. Officers took cover and began issuing commands.

While trying to get the kids safely out, police say 35-year-old Broderick Early Kennedy came out of the bedroom and surrendered to police.

Inside the bedroom, police found Broderick’s wife, 38-year-old Donille Lashay Kennedy, shot dead.

Police also found Donille’s mother, 58-year-old Shirley Jean Phillip, had been shot but was still alive. She was taken to the hospital, where she later died.

Police say the two kids have been released to extended family members.

It’s unclear what led up to the shooting.

Broderick is charged with capital murder. He’s being held at the Garland Detention Center without bond.
