Fort Worth police release video of officers shooting suspect who fired at officers

Fort Worth police released body camera video of an officer-involved shooting that injured an armed suspect.

Fort Worth police released body camera video of an officer-involved shooting that injured an armed suspect.

On March 14, officers responded to a 911 call about a man who was intoxicated, suicidal and was threatening her with a gun.

The 911 caller was the wife of the 64-year-old suspect Robert Ramos. She said he had been drinking all day.

"He doesn’t want to leave, and he was threatening me. But he also found my gun that was in the safe," the wife told investigators. And I told him I was going to call 911. He said go ahead because its going to be a battle."

When officers arrived, one officer was across the street trying to calm Ramos down.

Initially, the officer said he did not see a gun. He then moved by a tree where he then said he could see that Ramos had a weapon.

There is no angle of the body camera video provided by police where you can clearly see a weapon.

Other officers waited on the side of the home behind Ramos.

According to Fort Worth Police Chief Neil Noakes, the responding officer across the street talked to Ramos for more than 20 minutes.

FULL NEWS CONFERENCE: Fort Worth police discuss officers shooting armed suspect

On March 14, officers responded to a 911 call from a woman who said her husband was suicidal and was threatening her with a gun.

Noakes says their crisis intervention team was called to the scene but did not arrive before Ramos fired three shots at officers. Three officers returned fire.

"Quite frankly, I don’t know if anyone from the CIT could have done any better," the chief said. "And this officer has been trained and certified as a mental health peace officer as well."

Ramos was shot, but police have not said many times or detailed the extent of his injuries. He is still in the hospital.

Noakes says the crisis intervention team typically is dealing with other mental health calls when incidents like this happen. He says having mental health-certified officers is a priority.

"We currently have about 856 that are trained to that level. It takes a couple of years of service before the state allows someone to be certified. We have other officers working to get there as well," he said. "Our goal is to have every officer in the department as soon as they are eligible to have that training and to be certified."
