500+ animals killed due to fire at Plaza Latina Bazaar in Northwest Dallas
DALLAS - More than 500 animals were killed in a fire at the Plaza Latina Bazaar on Harry Hines Boulevard in Northwest Dallas on Friday
What We Know: The fire in the large, one-story shopping center near Harry Hines Boulevard and Denton Drive started around 9 a.m. on Friday.
Dallas Fire-Rescue said that by the time firefighters arrived, heavy smoke and flames were rising from the building. Images from SKY 4 showed a partially collapsed roof.
Firefighters had to use hoses and ladder pipes to fight the fire defensively. It took them about two hours to fully extinguish the blaze.
DFR officials said it's not clear how many people were inside when the fire started, but everyone made it out safely.
Dallas Fire-Rescue says there was a pet shop in the shopping center.
While the fire did not reach the pet shop, it did fill with smoke.
All of the animals in the shop died due to smoke inhalation, according to DFR.
It is believed more than 500 animals were killed.
According to Dallas Fire-Rescue, most of the animals were small birds.
What We Don’t Know: The cause of the fire is still unknown.
It’s not yet clear how much damage the fire caused or how the businesses operating out of the building will be affected.
