Feb. 2 marks 3rd anniversary of Chris Kyle's death

People across the state are being encouraged to honor those who have served their country while marking the third anniversary of ‘American Sniper’ Chris Kyle’s death.

“Today I proclaimed Feb. 2 will be Texas Military Heroes Day. We thank all Texans who’ve served our country. #vets,” Gov. Greg Abbott said Tuesday on Twitter.

Kyle and fellow serviceman Chad Littlefield were killed on Feb. 2, 2013 at a North Texas gun range. They were trying to help a former Marine who suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder.

Jurors last year rejected Eddie Ray Routh’s insanity defense and sentenced him to life in prison.

Kyle had four tours in Iraq and is considered to be the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history. His life was depicted in the blockbuster film “American Sniper.”

“Today we stop and pay tribute to Chris Kyle and Chad Littlefield, who on this day, three years ago were taken from us suddenly. Chris and Chad were a true inspiration to many,” the Chris Kyle Frog Foundation posted on Facebook.

The foundation works to keep Kyle’s legacy alive by assisting military families. For more information, visit www.chriskylefrogfoundation.org.
