Fallen heroes honored at DFW National Cemetery for Memorial Day

DALLAS - Veterans were honored on this Memorial Day at Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery in West Dallas.

The morning ceremony included music by a United States Army band and a cannon salute. The Midlothian High School choir also performed.

Thousands of families and supporters of fallen heroes made the cemetery their priority stop for the day. Rose Kouns and her family were there to remember her dad who was a Vietnam War veteran.

"It's very moving to know that people are still wanting to come and give their thanks and love to people no longer with us and who gave the ultimate sacrifice for our country," she said.

Paula Coleman was there to honor her son who was a staff sergeant in the Air Force.

"Just need this special time to be with him and say, 'Hey, mom is here. I miss you,'" she said.

Doug and Tracy Myers do not have relatives buried at DFW National Cemetery but wanted to bring their children for a lesson that is priceless.

"We want our kids to understand and appreciate that these people sacrificed their time in their lives for us to have what we have. We all get to appreciate it even if we're not blood relatives," Doug Myers said.

There were other Memorial Day events happening across North Texas.

In Arlington, Moore Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens had guest speakers from the Wounded Warriors Project and the city’s mayor pro tem.

Duncanville used the day to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Memorial Park.

And the city of McKinney hosted its 12th annual Memorial Day ceremony at Ridgeview Memorial Park.
