A 16-year-old student was shot in the leg Wednesday morning while trying to catch a bus to Duncanville High School.

Police said it happened near McAlister Street and Straus Road in Cedar Hill. The student said he missed the bus at his normal stop, so he ran down the road to another location.

While he was waiting for the bus with two other students, police said a black male wearing a ski mask and dark clothing approached them with a revolver.

"He says, ‘Which one of y'all is going to give up your phone and your money?’” recalled student Kolby Brown. “I thought he was one of their friends playing until I seen that he had pulled out the gun. Then he shot at the ground, and then one of the kids got hit."

Kolby believes the bullet hit the sidewalk and ricocheted before hitting one of his fellow teens in the leg as the third one ran off. He says he just froze.

"Then, the guy with the gun turns and looks at me and says, ‘Give me your phone.’ And I said, ‘I don't got my phone.’ Then I took off running in the alleyway, and he takes off running, too.” Kolby recalled.

Kolby says it was only a matter of seconds before the school bus pulled up and the wounded teen got on the bus and was taken to Duncanville High for medical help.

"The injured student got on the bus and told the driver that he had been shot. This was the final bus stop, so the driver notified authorities and continued to school. Our administrative staff immediately provided medical attention to the student until paramedics arrived and the student was transported to a local hospital," said Duncanville High School Executive Principal Tia Simmons.

The injured student has been released from the hospital and is expected to be ok.

Police are still looking for the gunman, who fled in a white car.
