WATCH: DeSoto house fire; home engulfed in flames

Two people died in a house fire Tuesday afternoon in DeSoto, according to the DeSoto Fire Department.

Firefighters were unable to save two people who died in a house fire in DeSoto.

What We Know

Cell phone video shows flames coming from a home on Canyon Ridge Drive in DeSoto Tuesday around 2:30 p.m. Officials say the fire claimed the lives of two people.

Shelia Gaines has lived across the street from the home for about ten years.

"My husband would go over and help them from time to time. It’s just sad," she said.

Gaines says an elderly couple lived there.

"The wife was bedridden," she said. "She had fallen and couldn't get up on one occasion, and my husband went over and helped get her situated in the house."

Once at the scene, officials found the home unsafe to enter due to heavy flames and extensive damage.

The fire was eventually brought under control, and no other homes were damaged. However, firefighters soon discovered two people were inside the home and died.

Gaines says any loss is tough to deal with. But during the holiday season, she says she is praying for the victim’s son and his family.

"They were here last night on the front lawn. The whole neighborhood was out to render support for the family," she said. "It’s just sad. We experienced a loss recently, so it’s even more disappointment and sadness. Praying God helps the family."

What We Don’t Know

While investigators haven’t said what they believed caused the fire, Gaines said her husband saw flames in the back of the home.

"They were trying to get in the house. The fire was in the back of the house. It was really hot," she said. "My husband stood on the porch and couldn't go inside the house because the flames were so hot."

At this time, the medical examiner’s office has not identified the victims.
