Darrell Brooks sentencing; 2021 Milwaukee County domestic violence case

A Milwaukee County judge sentenced Darrell Brooks on Thursday, Sept. 5 to nine years in prison plus an additional nine years extended supervision tied to a domestic violence incident in Milwaukee from 2021.

Brooks was already sentenced to life in prison for killing six people in the Waukesha Christmas parade attack.

"I take responsibility for my actions fully," Brooks told the judge on Thursday.  "The biggest thing for me at this point is to move forward."

Prosecutors say Brooks ran over the mother of his child in November 2021. He was released on a $1,000 bond before killing six people with the same vehicle in the Waukesha Christmas parade attack. Then in December 2021, he was found guilty for intimidating that same woman.

"Mr. Brooks is the epitome of a domestic violence abuser," said Matthew Torbenson, prosecutor.

Prosecutors say that woman did plan on speaking in court until a political ad started circulating. It shows video from the Waukesha parade attack – video that has made the victim relive the trauma.

"She has made the choice – the conscious and deliberate choice not to be here because of that," Torbenson said.

In court Thursday, the judge asked Brooks about his kids.

"21,17,13 and my youngest daughter just turned 10 last week," Brooks answered. "I’ll never get to see her walk across the stage (crying)."

Brooks told the judge he is on a different path.
