Couple killed in Red Bird house fire

A man and a woman were killed early Tuesday morning when fire swept through their home in the Red Bird area of Dallas.

The fire started around 2 a.m. at the couple’s home on Havenwood Drive near Woodspan Drive. When firefighters got there they could see flames shooting out the front of the one-story house.

Neighbors quickly told them that the couple might still be inside.

Firefighters had to break through burglar bars on the front porch. Once they did they pulled a man in his 60s out of the blaze and started CPR.

He was taken to the hospital but did not survive. The bodies of his wife and dog were found in the house a short while later.

Fire officials said they do not believe the burglar bars prevented the couple from escaping the house. Instead they were simply overcome by the smoke and flames.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.
