DALLAS - A conservative activist who says it is his mission to keep the liberal news media honest may face protests Wednesday when he visits the Southern Methodist University campus.
James O’Keefe is no stranger to controversy, including the one that is now in the news.
His organization, Project Veritas, has generated controversy before for attempts to discredit liberal groups and expose media bias. This latest attempt to do so is getting a lot of attention.
A video shows a Washington Post reporter confronting a woman it says approached the paper with a fake sex assault story about embattled Alabama Senate candidate Roy Moore.
A bombshell report by the Post on Monday said it was a sting operation launched by Project Veritas to trick the Post into writing a false story.
The paper believes O’Keefe was behind it. He is known for undercover videos attempting to show that major media organizations will slant the news in a liberal direction.
He’ll be talking about his methods Wednesday night at SMU. The university’s chapter of the conservative group You Americans for Freedom is hosting the event.
“James O'Keefe is someone who really helped shaped the modern new media landscape who has a lot of great stories from his time exposing leftists, and a lot of great stories from his time as a conservative activist himself,” said Spenser Brown, a national spokesman for YAF.
The YAF chapter at SMU said it has never encouraged student activists to pursue undercover journalism. But it says that technique can help improve the integrity of powerful organizations.
The event is set for 7 p.m. at the Hughes-Trigg Student Center Theater and is open to the public.
