I-30 at Hwy 360 will be closed in Arlington this weekend

There will be major road construction happening this weekend on Interstate 30 at Highway 360. Traffic reporter Chip Waggoner explains what's happening and how to avoid the detour.

A construction project is shutting down a stretch of Interstate 30 this weekend in Arlington.

The portion from Collins Street to the President George Bush Turnpike will be closed in both directions.

The work begins Friday night at 7 p.m. and should end Sunday around 8 a.m. Tolls along the detour route will be free during that time.

“If they can avoid the area during the closure, they should,” said Val Lopez, TxDOT Public Information Officer.

The area typically sees about 300,000 drivers go through a day, and it’s about to get a big makeover.

“It’s time to make this a modern, direct-connect interchange and it’ll look something like the High Five or the mixmaster. It is definitely something out of the 21st century when we complete this project.

But for that to happen, TxDOT will need to demolish some old structures in the area, thus the total closures for the weekend.

Traffic will be re-routed onto Division Street. TxDOT says drivers can expect delays of at least 20-25 minutes using the detour.

“Generally it runs pretty well, but if you can avoid it you definitely should,” Lopez said.

TxDOT officials say they’ve been letting businesses in the area know how they’ll be affected.

“We’ve been working very closely with the venues in the area. We know there’s a Cowboys game Sunday afternoon, but all lanes should be open by early morning on Sunday,” Lopez said.

With pleasant weather in the forecast this weekend, crews are not expecting any major delays with the project.
