Arlington officer fatally shoots DWI suspect

Arlington police say an officer shot and killed a suspected drunken driver after that driver tried to run him over. Before that, police say the driver refused to stop and surrender during a chase.

An Arlington police officer shot and killed a suspected drunken driver after that man tried to run down the officer, according to police.

The shooting happened around 2:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon after police said two officers responded to reports of a suspected drunken driver in an SUV. He was reportedly stopped in the middle of Pioneer Parkway and slumped over the steering wheel.

When the officers arrived and told the man to stay where he was, police said he drove off and officers followed him in low-speed pursuit.

He eventually stopped and the officers tried to place him under arrest for evading. But he took off again.

He stopped a second time in a neighborhood cul-de-sac south of East Arkansas near South Collins Street. Arlington police said that’s when he made a U-turn and started driving toward one of the officers who had gotten out of his vehicle.

The officer fired multiple times, hitting the driver and killing him.

There’s now a criminal and administrative investigation underway.

"There is body worn camera footage. It is being reviewed at this time by our investigators and once our investigators have reviewed the footage it will be released. We will speak with the family and will determine what will be released," said Sgt. Chris Moore with the Arlington Police Department.

Both officers are on administrative leave as the shooting is being investigated.

Their names have not been released. Neither has the name of the man who was killed.
