A group of Arlington emergency medical technicians say they share a tight bond.
"Everybody's' a big family, whether or not we work with each other we know what we all go through together,"
paramedic Colton Dickey said.
Now, they're trying to help one of their own. EMT Damian Jay was diagnosed with cancer in October.
"I'm 34 years old. I'm thinking i have a good life ahead of me and all of a sudden I get a phone call and get told 'You've got cancer,'" Jay said.
Doctors tell him has a brain tumor. Jay has gone through chemotherapy and other treatments that have left him too sick to work.
"From 72 hours a week to zero a week on no income, zero dollars whatsoever a month has been... It's taken a toll," Jay said. "One of the hardest things to cope with for me when I first found out was how am I able to sit and save strangers? How can I help hundreds of thousands of different people all the time, yet here I am with this and I can't help myself?"
The father of two is using this rare time at home to be with his kids. He has surgery on Monday and is optimistic.
"I have no choice. I've got kids. I've got a family. I've got no chance but to get up and do what I'm doing on a day-to-day basis," Jay said.
He hopes to be back on the job by December.
