3 Forney family members die after West Texas crash

Only one member of a Forney family will survive a devastating crash that happened in West Texas on the day after Christmas.

A preliminary report from the Texas Department of Public Safety says the crash happened just after noon on Dec. 26 along State Highway 206 in Callahan County, about 40 miles southeast of Abilene. It was raining and the roads were wet at the time.

The driver of a large van lost control on the wet roadway, crossed into oncoming traffic and hit the Mikulik family’s SUV head-on, according to the crash report.

Bryan and Debra Mikulik of Forney died at the scene. Their 14-year-old daughter, Olivia, was taken to Cook Children’s Medical Center in Fort Worth where she died Monday. Their second daughter, 15-year-old Alexa, was injured but is expected to recover.

Two people in the van were also killed including James Hurley of San Angelo, Texas and Joyce Collier of Brody, Texas. Six other van passengers, including three children, were taken to area hospitals with non-life-threatening injuries.

The crash is still under investigation. Everyone was wearing a seatbelt, according to the preliminary report.
