Two people were killed and several others injured after a gunman opened fire on the campus of University of North Carolina at Charlotte Tuesday evening.

The shooting happened about 5:40 p.m., according to university officials. UNCC Niner Alerts tweeted that gunshots were reported near Kennedy Hall, an administrative building on campus.

"Shots reported near kennedy. Run, Hide, Fight. Secure yourself immediately," the tweet read.

UNC Charlotte Chief of Police Jeff Baker said a suspect armed with a pistol entered the building and opened fire. Officers arrived within two to three minutes, entered the building and were able to subdue the shooter.

The accused gunman, 22-year-old Trystan A. Terrell, was taken into custody. Video showed Terrell being led away in handcuffs shortly after police arrived on campus.

Terrell has been charged with two counts of murder, four counts of attempted murder, four counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill, possession of a firearm on educational property, and discharging a firearm on educational property.

"Our officers actions definitely saved lives. There’s no doubt about that,” Baker said.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said there is no reason to believe that anyone else was involved.

Four other people were injured in the shooting, three of which have been listed in critical condition, according to Medic.

The Lambda Delta Chapter of Alpa Tau Omega confirmed that one of their fraternity brothers, Drew Pescaro, was injured in the shooting. He was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition.

Officials have not released the names of the other victims.

"Why would anyone do this. We were just doing presentations and someone started shooting up the room. We didn't do anything but our work. Stay safe UNCC," he tweeted.

Students and families were instructed to head to 8600 University City Boulevard. The campus remained on lockdown for 12 hours following the shooting. The Kennedy building remains closed on Wednesday due to an active crime scene, school officials said.

The university has more than 26,500 students and 3,000 faculty and staff.
