A teenager who played basketball at Denton Guyer High School was hit by a car and killed over the weekend.

Police said 16-year-old Corey West and another teen tried to cross S. Loop 288 at McKinney Street Sunday night. He was hit by a Jeep SUV and died at the hospital.

The driver stopped to help and did not appear to be impaired by drugs or alcohol. No charges are expected, police said.

West's uncle said he was a good kid who loved playing basketball.

"He was a very outgoing person -- typical AB student, very athletic. He was on the basketball team and an all-around good guy," Sterling Conley said.

Classmates turned to Twitter to share their memories and offer condolences. One of West's former teachers talked to FOX 4 about how much he'll be missed.

"He was a great student. He was always smiling and so full of energy. I had him in freshman Algebra I last year. It's a tragic loss to our school. Corey was the joker of the classroom. He made everyone laugh, but he worked so hard in class. I'm going to miss seeing him in the halls," said Mary Dean.
