11-year-old killed crossing Irving highway on the way to school
IRVING, Texas - An 11-year-old boy was killed Tuesday morning while trying to cross Highway 161 to get to school.
Irving police said the accident happened around 7 a.m. in the 3000 block of Hwy. 161, which is between Northgate Drive and Rochelle Road. Police say the young boy was hit multiple times. All of the drivers stopped to help, but the boy died at the scene.
“No indication that the driver was doing anything illegal or was distracted in any way,” said Irving Police Officer James McLellan. “Just unfortunate someone was in the roadway.”
The boy lived at an apartment next to Highway 161. While Irving ISD is not saying which school he attended, Haley Elementary School is just over a mile away on the other side of the highway. Police believe the boy was trying to cross the busy roadway to get to school.
Irving ISD says it is working with Dallas County Schools to find out if the student would normally ride the bus to school.
"Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of an Irving ISD student who passed away while walking to school this morning,” the school district said in a statement. “This is a tragic loss for the entire Irving ISD community and the student's elementary school family."
Counselors will be at the school for the boy's teachers and friends.
Police are still working to notify the child's immediate family members. They say the first driver to hit the child will not face any charges.
