Public vigil, private funeral set for Fort Worth officer

FORT WORTH, Texas - Murdered Fort Worth Officer Garrett Hull will be laid to rest Friday afternoon with a private funeral and burial.

Officer Hull was shot in the head last week while on an undercover assignment. He and other officers confronted three suspects as they were robbing a bar.

The man who killed Hull was shot and killed by other officers. Two others were arrested.

On Monday, the fallen officer’s body was taken by a procession and honor guard from the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office to a funeral home on Monday. People lined the streets along the way to show their respect.

“It’s terrible he had to lose his life to get criminals off the streets but at least he made a mark with what he has done. I know the whole city of Fort Worth is very proud of him. He is a hero,” said Joretta Lanier, whose grandson is a police officer.

Although Officer Hull’s funeral will be open to only immediate family and police officers, the public is invited to a candlelight vigil Wednesday night at 7:35 p.m. outside the police headquarters.

The public is also encouraged to stand along the route to Greenwood Memorial Cemetery for Officer Hull’s burial procession or stop by the growing memorial outside the Fort Worth Police Department’s headquarters.

The police department said the support from the community means a lot to the Hull family and his fellow officers who are grieving.

“We have a whole department of officers who are hurting right now and we want to point out that they are still out there working every day,” said Sgt. Chris Britt, a spokesman for Fort Worth PD. “Please keep sending your comments through our social, through our email or whatever you’ve got. We’ve been reading those and we greatly appreciate that support. That’s been absolutely tremendous.”
