Police searching for hit-&-run driver who killed cyclist Sunday morning

Grand Prairie police on Monday released enhanced surveillance video to find the driver who hit and killed a cyclist on Sunday morning.

Calvin Middleton, 42, had on the proper gear and lights, but a driver plowed right into him from behind on Belt Line Road near Interstate 20 about 6 a.m. Sunday.

Cops said the driver of a dark-colored, 4 door sedan, possibly a Chevy Malibu or Impala, is responsible for hitting and killing Middleton. Police say surveillance cameras captured the car with front end damage and the passenger side headlight out being followed by a white truck.

Police said during a Monday press conference they’ve gotten a number of tips, but no solid leads.

The driver briefly returned to the scene with her passenger. A witness heard her ask if Middleton was dead before the two women drove away. Middleton died at the scene.

The two people in that dark-colored sedan are described as black women in their late 20's. The driver wore a pink shirt, khaki shorts and pink tennis shoes.

Shon Middleton says cycling had become his brother's passion. He describes his brother as a soft-spoken man of few words, who lit up when talking about his sport.

“He took care on every ride,” he said. “He had on reflectors, lights on his bike, pretty much everything they said to be safe, he followed those rules.”

Calvin’s godmother pleaded for anyone with information to come forward.

“Somebody has to know something,” said Patsy Haley. “Give us peace so that we can rest and bury him knowing that everything was taken care of.”

“I just don't want my son's life to be taken and people are still walking around like he was nothing. He was somebody,” said Middleton’s mother. “All he wanted to do was ride his bike. He loved riding that bike.”

Calvin Middleton leaves behind two daughters and a grandson.

Cops said what would've been a simple accident has now become a second-degree felony to stop and render aid. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Grand Prairie Police at (972) 237-8906, or Crime Stoppers at 972 988-8477 (TIPS).
