Officers fatally shoot suspect in Bedford
BEDFORD, Texas - A man was shot and killed by police Tuesday morning in the Fort Worth suburb of Bedford.
Police said the deadly confrontation was a continuation of an earlier incident. Around 2 a.m. officers were called to check on a suspicious vehicle in the 1200 block of Airport Freeway and it took off.
The vehicle was spotted again around 4:30 a.m. outside a house on Hurst Drive in south Bedford.
Police say the shooting happened as officers tried to make contact with the man.
In a statement, police say that one officer fired at the driver after the man reportedly reached for a weapon. The Texas Rangers are assisting Bedford police who say they haven't given many details because they're still investigating what happened. They haven’t said yet if a weapon has been recovered.
Several residents reported hearing the gunshots.
"Our big dog barked once. Right after that, we heard three shots. It sounded liked someone pounded on our door,” said neighbor Mindy Wheaton. “It's an older community. We all watch making sure no one suspicious is around. It's kind of shocking.”
Only one officer fired shots at the suspect. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers were hurt, police said.
Police have not yet released the names of the suspect or the officers involved.
The Texas Rangers are helping with the investigation.
