A fire badly damaged the La Joya Mexican Cocina restaurant in Downtown Wylie overnight.

The fire started just before midnight Wednesday with heavy smoke coming from the restaurant on Ballard Avenue. Firefighters from Wylie got help from Murphy, Plano and Sacshe to put out the flames.

No one was in the building at the time and no one was hurt. However, people who live in the area said La Joya Mexican Cocina is a popular, family-owned business that will likely suffer because of all the damage.

“It’s sad because right here in Wylie it's a very calm town with not that much going on. So just the fact that I see this, I’m like wow! It has to be bad. It's sad. It’s sad that this happened,” said Carlos Quinones, a Wylie resident.

The cause is still under investigation. It should not affect the “Boo on Ballard” trick-or-treating event in Downtown Wylie Thursday night.
