Procedures are being reviewed after a woman walking near Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas found a pile of medical supplies that wasn’t in a dumpster.
Ashley Childress was walking her dog across the street from the hospital when her dog first came up to hundreds of items, some marked biohazard.
She snapped a photo and posted it on social media. She also called 311, but never got a hold of a person that could help her.
“I don't want my Deep Ellum friends and everything, I don't want people walking their dogs and stepping on that. Especially, right on the DART rail,” Childress said.
Shortly after FOX4 arrived near the pile by mid-afternoon on Monday, work crews started sweeping up the pile.
The property is owned by Baylor and is part of its Faith In Action ministry warehouse.
“Our staff immediately responded and determined that these were clean and unused supplies. These supplies were expired and had recently been discarded by our Faith in Action Initiatives program, which uses donated medical equipment and supplies in mission work around the world. We are reviewing our processes related to the disposal of unused supplies.”
Childress believes even though it was clean, it could have been dangerous.
“Even if it's not used and there are kids and dogs walking around -- that's not okay,” Childress said.
Hospital officials said they were still conducting a review to determine what exactly was in the pile of materials.
