DALLAS - While many kids have been in school for a week or two already, Monday is the first day of school for students in Dallas.
There are roughly 630 students in the Dallas Independent School District and there is a lot of anticipation among the students.
FOX 4’s Dan Godwin talked to Superintendent Michael Hinojosa at Arturo Salazar Elementary in West Oak Cliff. He said he tries to visit as many schools as he can on the first day.
“It’s actually very exciting. All the kids are back and the parents are glad to give the kids back and it’s very exciting to get going,” he said.
Dallas ISD is glad to say it is making progress with underperforming schools. There are fewer of them than just a few years ago.
“We had 337 and dropped down to 14. And we’re making a lot of improvements in school. But this school has earned a lot of distinctions in West Oak Cliff,” Hinojosa said. “I’m very proud of the progress at this campus.”
Students in 64 other North Texas districts also start Monday including Garland, Lewisville, Mesquite, Carrollton-Farmers Branch, McKinney, Northwest and Rockwall.
