Journalist and former First Lady of California Maria Shriver is on a mission to wipe out Alzheimer’s disease. She was in Dallas Monday as part of her awareness campaign and stopped by Good Day.

The fight against Alzheimer’s is personal for her. Her father Sargent Shriver died at the age of 95 after battling Alzheimer’s for several years.

While it was her father who died, Shriver really wants to raise awareness among women. Almost two-thirds of Americans with Alzheimer’s are women.

Besides funding for research, she talked about building awareness and education being the key.

“People need to start thinking about brain health in their 20s and 30s. What we eat, how we work…  can we meditate? How do we sleep? How do we run our lives? How do we keep our brains active as we age? In our 30s, 40s, 50s and beyond and what we've learned now is we can keep our brains fit like our bodies,” she said.

Shriver invited the public to attend a fundraising event benefiting the Women’s Alzheimer’s Movement. The three-hour experience includes a mind-body workout class, a marketplace with brain-healthy snacks and a panel discussion featuring brain research, fitness and nutrition experts.

The event is June 4 at Equinox in Dallas. For more information, visit https://donate.thewomensalzheimersmovement.org/dallas/events/move-for-minds-dallas/e117521.
