Jerry Jones moving forward after Goodell locks in contract extension

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones made it clear he wants to limit the power of NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell.

He previously complained about the way Goodell handled the Ezekiel Elliott suspension and threatened to sue the league. But on Wednesday, Jones sounded more positive about the commissioner and his newly signed contract extension.

Goodell's contract is now a done deal, but the situation has gotten contentious over the last few months among jerry jones, Goodell and the other NFL owners.

Both sides admitting they've had their differences, but talked on Wednesday a lot about making the league stronger together.

Goodell is set to receive $200 million over the next five years in his new contract, which extends him as commissioner until 2024. But 90 percent of that contract is based on Goodell's performance.

Jones said NFL owners will be selecting a group to decide what Goodell's bonuses moving forward are. Jones had previously brought up concerns the contract should match Goodell's performance, pointing to issues like the way the national anthem controversy has been handled by the league, declining viewership and concerns of sponsors.

Jones even threatened a lawsuit at one point to block the contract from going through. At the time, he said his attempts to block Goodell's contract extension had nothing to do with star running back Ezekiel Elliott's six-game suspension issued this season. But Goodell and Jones said the contract issue has been resolved and are moving forward and making changes to make the league better.

“You have to evolve, and you have to make changes. Frankly, that is what this has been about,” Jones said. “If you saw anything happening, did I cause them to be made? You can't one person do it in the national football league. It takes 32 owners.”

“As a league, we're stronger when 32 teams are together,” Goodell said. “We have our differences, but we work together to try to solve those differences and address them in a way we think is going to be responsible.”

There has been speculation on if this will be Goodell's last contract or not. He said he hasn't made a final decision on that yet and is just focused on moving forward.

Jones also spoke about making changes to the NFL constitution and the commissioner's power with regards to things like handing down punishments, but no specifics on when those changes will take place.
